SFAS's Conservation Leadership Initiative Student

CLI student - Natajah Fuller

Nothing in my life has made more sense to me than choosing to dedicate my life to conservation and wildlife as an environmental science major. In this day and age, it can be hard for a student to remain focused and remain dedicated to their goals. Being a CLI student has kept me grounded by giving me the opportunity to network with amazing like-minded individuals. I truly can’t describe how special it is to be apart of this community.

In Loving Memory of Grant Campbell

In Loving Memory of Grant Campbell

Grant Perrin Campbell entered peaceful eternity on October 9, 2020, his 82nd birthday.  He joins his loving wife of nearly 53 years, Ruth Ann Campbell.  He is survived by his sons Brian and Joel, both of Fort Lauderdale.

There will be no service and cremation has taken place.  Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the South Florida Audubon Society’s Project Perch, to carry on his work for the burrowing owls that he and Ruth adored. (projectperch@southfloridaaudubon.org

Grant was the eighth of nine children.  He grew up in Michigan, learning the trades from his father, and would go on to be a gifted carpenter, building everything from houses to musical instruments.  He served in the Navy and later founded G Campbell & Sons, insulating the cruise ships in Port Everglades.

Grant was passionate and worked tirelessly over the years on many causes and projects.  He was the Director of Wildlife Policy and Project Perch, Conservation Chair, and served on the board of the South Florida Audubon Society for 15 years. Grant loved nature, saving hundreds of birds and animals over the years and building hundreds of artificial owl burrows (the Campbell-Mealey Flood-Zone Artificial Owl Burrow).

Grant’s proposal to the Broward County Board of County Commissioners led to the creation of a conservation easement at Port Everglades. The Port Everglades Wetland Enhancement Project received a ‘Notification of Trending Towards Success’ from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in the Fall of 2016 for successfully cultivating 16.5 acres of nursery-grown mangrove and native plants on property that was originally dry land intended for other uses.

In 2010, Grant was presented with a BIOS Award from the South Florida Audubon Society for exhibiting extraordinary stewardship for issues related to conservation, wildlife, and the environment.

Grant was an intelligent, strong, humble, fearless, hopeful, kind, patient, a die-hard democrat, a serious activist, and a hard worker with a dry hilarious sense of humor.  Grant was loved by all of us and will be missed terribly.
